1999頃の Internet Explorer 5 はカスタムタグ (custom tags) を実装した。 html に xmlns 属性を指定して接頭辞 (prefix) を宣言することで、その接頭辞を使った独自の要素が使えるようになる。また、 DHTML behavior によってその挙動を記述できる。 XML Namespaces 仕様に基づくとされるが、当時の仕様案を HTML 用に改変したもので、現行 XML Namespaces 仕様とは異なる。現在のカスタム要素に当たるが互換性はない。
