[[HTML]] や [[CSS]] で記述できないものをこの機能と同形の[[要素]]で記述していた。
[CITE[XML Namespaces]]
に基づくとされるが、当時の仕様案 (その名の通り [[XML]] 用) を
[[HTML]]
用に改変したもので、現行仕様とは異なる。
