[[HTML]] 等 [[Web技術]]の利用に関する[[Webページ]]の大規模な実態調査は、
[TIME[西暦2006年][2006]]にはじめて発表されました ([TIME[2005-12]]実施)。
[[Google]] 社が [[Google検索]]の[[索引]]データを活用して全世界の
[[Webページ]]を対象に行なったもので、
担当者は明記されていませんが、
[[Ian Hickson]] 
によるものだと知られています。

[[Ian Hickson]]
は
[[WHATWG]]
で
[[HTML5]]
を開発していました。
([[Google]] 社員でしたが100%の割合で [[HTML]] の標準化に従事していました。)
この調査結果はその後の
[[HTML5]]
の新機能の追加や既存機能の改良に活用されました。

[[Webページ]]の状態を統計的な処理によって把握し、
[[Web標準]]の開発に活用するという手法はこれが歴史上初めてでした。
これ以後徐々に態勢が整えられ、
今では当然のように行われています。

ところでこの[TIME[西暦2006年][2006]]の調査結果は衝撃的な内容を含んでいました。
それは誰しもが薄々感じていたことではありましたが、
はっきり数字を示されたことで、
現実を直視せざるを得なくなりました。
すなわち、

- (「専門家」が使うなと言い続けてきた) [[物理要素]]は溢れかえっていて、
- (「専門家」がずっと求め続けてきた) 「正しいHTML」なんてどこにもなくて、
- それどころかみんな英語の綴りもまともに書けやしない
