Network ASCII (Net-ASCII、Telnet ASCII、NVT ASCII) は、 Telnet で用いられている ASCII のプロファイルあるいは変種です。標準の ASCII に当時の ARPANET で使われていた端末での通信の互換性を考慮した制御文字の解釈や制限を加えたものであり、 Telnet に限らず SMTP や FTP など多くのプロトコルで暗黙的または明示的な前提となってきました。

ASCII
The ASCII character set is as defined in the ARPA-Internet Protocol Handbook. In FTP, ASCII characters are defined to be the lower half of an eight-bit code set (i.e., the most significant bit is zero).
