多くの言語に include や import のような機能があるが、 HTML にもそれを求める提案は非常に多い。要素名を示さない提案や他の要素名の提案で同様のものまで含めればかなりの数になる。この種の提案には大きく2系統ある。

説明

1つは本文 HTML と別種のものを埋め込む機能を提供するもので、紆余曲折の末に HTML4 で object に結実した。 img, applet 等媒体ごとに要素を追加せずに済むのが利点とされた。しかし要素の数が減るだけで、その他のすべてが複雑化するとわかり、 HTML5 は用途別の要素を定める方針に転換した。が、それ以後もこの系統の提案は続いている。

説明

もう1つは別の HTML を挿入する機能を提供するものである。サーバー側の雛形言語の類では NCSA HTTPd の SSI 以来、ほぼ必須の機能として実装されてきた。 SSI Netscape Navigator 2.0 が実装したフレームは、機能性は異なるにせよ、同じような目的で使われ得るものだった。 XML に於いては取り込み機能が XInclude として標準化された。 XInclude1 Webブラウザーでは実装されなかったが、サーバー側で XHTML と組み合わせて用いられることはあった。 Webメンテ GenshiXML とはいえこれらだけでは著者の満足するところとならず、この系統の提案は現在まで繰り返されている。
