さらにややこしいことに、インディアナ州全体がサマータイム不参加というわけではありません。

インディアナ州の大部分は、ニューヨークなどと同じ東部標準時であり、サマータイムがないので夏場は中西部サマータイム(シカゴなど)と同じになります。

しかし、隣の州とのつながりが大きい南東部の5郡(上の地図で赤く表示した小さな地域)ではサマータイムを導入しているため、1年中、東部時間と同じになります。また、シカゴに近い北西部と、南西部の、計10郡では標準時自体が中西部時間と同じであり、サマータイムも導入されています(つまり、年中シカゴと同じ時間)。

アメリカ人にとっても、周辺でインディアナ州だけサマータイムが導入されていないために混乱を生ずることがあるようです。近年一層の工業化が進む中で、当初の不参加理由も意味を失いつつあり、「サマータイム空白区域を埋めるべき」との議論も強くなっているようです。

また、アリゾナ州については、「例外の例外」があります。上に書いたとおり、アリゾナ州自体はサマータイムを実施しないのですが、州北東部にあるナバホ・インディアン保護区(自治区)内では、他の州と同じようにサマータイムを実施しています。このため、夏場にナバホ・インディアン地区内にある「モニュメントバレー」へ、グランドキャニオン(アリゾナ州)から向かう場合、同じ州内でありながら、モニュメントバレーの方が1時間時計が進んでいることになります。

I got to experience this first hand by accident: in late 2009 - early 2010, I was camping in Vidal, CA. The nearest town is to the east (Parker, AZ) and I noticed that Vidal is on Arizona time (Mountain Standard Time), but because Vidal is in California, it was assigned Pacific time by the ACS Atlas which is not correct. The people who live in Vidal are on AZ time because they work in Parker, AZ just 15 miles away and want to keep their clocks synchronized to their work schedule. Also in Arizona the Navajo tribes in the four corners area observe DST against official AZ rules because neighboring tribes in CO, NM and UT do so. In Nunavut Canada, 3 different time standards were observed in the same town and each business had it's own time standard depending upon the industry!
