ソフトバンクは、ボーダフォン、チャイナモバイル、ベライゾンなどとジョイント・イノベーション・ラボ(JIL)を設立し、携帯電話向けのウィジェットを開発。「JILウィジェット」と呼ばれる機能が、ボーダフォンの「Vodafone 360」というプラットフォームに実装された。JILはその後、オープンな携帯アプリ配信プラットフォームの開発を目指して各国の携帯電話事業者がつくったWholesale Applications Communityと統合したが、最近は目立った成果を上げていない。

JILにはソフトバンクも設立に加わっていますが、同社の携帯電話ウィジェット環境「モバイルウィジェット」のベースとなっているACCESSの「NetFront Browser Widgets」と、JILとは別の技術です。

JILウィジェットプラットフォームは、Symbian 9、Windows Mobile 6、AndroidなどLinuxプラットフォーム、QVGA以上のディスプレイサイズ、GPRS/EDGE以上の通信速度、HTTP1.1/WAP2.0互換の環境で動作します。ウィジェットはHTML、CSS、Javaスクリプトの仕組みを利用して作成します。ウィジェットのサイズは、500KB以内となります。

In the brand new release of Opera Widgets Runtime for Android there are plenty of new exciting features, including support for the newly available Widget Handset APIs from the WAC initiative. These provide widgets with a greater level of device access previously only available to native applications. Using these new APIs we can take pictures, check GPS location, browse our address books, access accelerometer information, and even send SMS, MMS and E-Mail messages!
