[12] HTML 等 Web技術の利用に関するWebページの大規模な実態調査は、 西暦2006年2006にはじめて発表されました (2005-12実施)。 Google 社が Google検索の索引データを活用して全世界の Webページを対象に行なったもので、 担当者は明記されていませんが、 Ian Hickson によるものだと知られています。

[13] 当時 Ian Hickson は WHATWG で HTML5 を開発していました。 (Google 社員でしたが100%の割合で HTML の標準化に従事していました。) この調査結果はその後の HTML5 の新機能の追加や既存機能の改良に活用されました。

[14] 実在する Webページの状態を統計的な処理によって把握し、 Web標準の開発に活用するという手法はこれが歴史上初めてでした。 これ以後徐々に態勢が整えられ、 今では当然のように行われています。

[15] ところでこの西暦2006年2006の調査結果は衝撃的な内容を含んでいました。 それは誰しもが薄々感じていたことではありましたが、 はっきり数字を示されたことで、 現実を直視せざるを得なくなりました。 すなわち、

• (「専門家」が使うなと言い続けてきた) 物理要素は溢れかえっていて、
• (「専門家」がずっと求め続けてきた) 「正しいHTML」なんてどこにもなくて、
• それどころかみんな英語の綴りもまともに書けやしない
