[30] Acid3 は、 WebブラウザーによるWeb標準の実装状況を視覚的に簡易的に示す Acid Tests の第3弾です。

概要

[31] Acid Tests は WaSP によって提供されており、 Acid3 は Ian Hickson によって制作されました。

[32] Acid3 は2003年時点で仕様化されていた技術に対する適合性を試験するものとして、 2007年に制作・発表され、その後何度か細かい改訂が行われています。

[33] レンダリングに焦点を当てた Acid2 に対して、 Acid3 では Web API に焦点が当てられています。2007年頃にはようやく各 Webブラウザーが Acid2 を正しくレンダリングできるようになってきており、 その後仕様化されたものの未だ十分実装されていなかった技術が Acid3 に含められました。

[34] 2003年は WHATWG による HTML5 (2004年) の前にあたり、 Web の基盤となる技術はまだ十分に仕様化されていませんでした。 そのため、2003年当時の仕様だけでは当初予定していたテスト数に到達しない一方で、 重要な技術は含められないという矛盾した状況も生じ、 Acid3 は適当ではないといった批判もありました。

[35] そのような背景もあって、数年後に SVG Fonts がテストから削除されるなど、 何度か Web 関連技術と仕様と実装の変化にあわせて改訂されています。

WaSP operations declared success in 2013, and the Acid Tests are correspondingly no longer being maintained. Acid3, in particular, contains some controversial tests and no longer reflects the consensus of the Web standards it purports to test, especially when it comes to issues affecting mobile browsers. The tests remain available for historical purposes and for use by browser vendors. It would be inappropriate, however, to use them as part of a certification process, especially for mobile browsers.
