An island emerged off Gwadar coast after a powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck Pakistan on Tuesday. Seismologists believe the formation is a 'mud volcano.'

パキスタンでM7.7の地震 46人死亡、海上に島が出現

イスラマバード(CNN) パキスタン南部バルチスタン州で24日にマグニチュード(M)7.7の地震があり、地元当局者によると、同州アワランで少なくとも46人が死亡、数十人が負傷した。

地元警察によると、この地震で同州南部グワダル沖合の海上に高さ6~9メートルの島が出現し、大勢の見物人が詰めかけているという。

米地質調査所(USGS)によると、震源地はアワランの北東部69キロ、震源の深さは約15キロ。アワランでは住宅などの倒壊で住民らががれきの下敷きになっている恐れがあり、救助隊や医療班など1000人あまりが現地に向かっている。

一方、GEOテレビによれば、グワダル沖の海上に出現した島は直径30メートルほど、沿岸から約1.6キロの地点にあるという。大地震では大きな地殻の変動が起きることがあり、特に沿岸部ではそうした変動が目に見えやすい。

米国立地震観測所の専門家も、島が形成されたことを確認した。ただ、米地質調査所の専門家は、今回のような地震でこれほどの大きさの島が出現することは、一般的にはあまりないと話している。

地震の揺れは2分ほど続き、バルチスタン州の州都クエッタでも人々が建物の外に避難した。南東部の都市カラチでも余震が感じられた。
